Study Tips
Did you know? Students who consistently do homework perform better academically than those who do not do homework? By doing homework, students can improve academic achievement in all subjects? Homework, aside from reinforcing academic learning, teaches a child to: follow directions; start and complete work on time; be more responsible; and be self-reliant.
The Abbotsford School District weekly homework guidelines are:
- Grade 2/3 - 15 to 30 minutes per day for 4 days
- Grade 4/5 - 30 to 60 minutes per day for 4 Days
- Kindergarten and Grade One students may also be assigned work to do at home. Most frequently this is part of the teacher's Home Reading program.
Homework Tips for Parents
- Have clear expectations about the importance of homework.
- Take a positive, assertive stand so your child understands the importance you place on homework.
- Check the Student Planner nightly.
- Expect homework to be recorded as assigned and checked off when completed.
- Schedule daily homework time.
- A specific preplanned time each day will help establish the “homework habit”.
- Set up a homework area. This should be a quiet place where all the tools and resources needed are close at hand.
- Encourage and praise your child’s efforts daily.
- Establish a homework network. When your child forgets something or is unsure of how to proceed call a “homework buddy” for help or clarification.
