Human and Social Development

Our students will study personal and human social skills and as they relate to students' identity in the world - both as individuals and as members of their community. We are learning that personal and human social skills encompass the abilities students needs to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.

Goals

  • Improve student sense of well-being.

😊 Self-Regulation: Supporting Student Well-Being

Based on our Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI) data administered to grade 5 students, 34% of our students say they feel confident calming themselves when upset or excited. We want to help students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

What we’re doing:

  • Teaching social-emotional skills like managing emotions, making good choices, and building positive relationships.

  • Using a program called We Thinkers! to help students learn strategies to stay calm and focused.

  • Creating a common language across the school to talk about feelings and how to handle them.

How we know it’s working:

  • Students complete self-checks to reflect on their feelings and behaviors.

  • Teachers observe how students use calming strategies and interact with others.

  • Families share feedback about how their children are doing emotionally and socially.
